Perhaps you're a start-up company needing a website that will work hard for you.

Maybe you've been made redundant and can set up on your own at last. Or perhaps you've just realised that a good website is pretty key to your company's success, and you just don't have one.

Whatever stage you're at with your business, you need a website.

My name is Pat Harper, and I know exactly what it's like to set up on your own. I started as a Marketing freelance 10 years ago and, though I had no money, I knew that a website was the first thing I had to get. It cost me over £1000 and was pretty awful by today's standards - and things like search engine optimisation and editable web pages were but a distant dream. But that website served me well, and now you can get a much better web presence at about a quarter of the vast cost I shelled out.

If you still have doubts as to whether you really need a website, let me ask you a question. What do you do when you're looking for a product or service? You go straight to the internet and type in what you're looking for, probably using Google. That's just what everyone else does too. A good-looking, well-written website is a great marketing tool, and can really make a difference to your business.

It's not just about having a website that looks wonderful - it's got to work. Search engines don't look at a website and think "Isn't this lovely - I must put it at the top of the search results". Visitors don't look at a website (if they've managed to find it in the first place) and think "This site looks gorgeous - I must give all my business to this company".

For a website to work it's also got to be

  • friendly to search engines
  • straightforward to navigate
  • easy to read
  • simple to edit and update
  • trackable

It can be tough going it alone - though as far as I'm concerned, it's the only way to go - and you have to spend your limited budget wisely. I found that my website (terrible though it was) not only helped me market my products and services to a wide audience; it also gave me credibility and was a real, measurable help in growing my business.

Remember that the priority for your website is not its look but rather how it helps market your business. Nevertheless, the design is also very important. For example, a clean and uncluttered image helps make your message stand out clearly so that you can emphasise those aspects of your service that attract people to what you have to offer.

Another important dynamic is the professional feel of the site. To make sure you come across in the right way, we start by choosing from a selection of over 70 stunning template options. Your site will also look unique because the design will be carefully tailored to your brand: adding in your logo, images and headlines and making them blend through graphic design work.
