I've been in Marketing for quite a while, but life really started when I left the fat-cat environment of corporate life and set up as a freelance Marketing person; please note, not a consultant - rather someone who could come in and actually make a difference to the marketing.
My definition of marketing owes nothing to the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), even though I did my marketing qualifications with them and am a Member of the Institute. (Just to show I do know what I'm talking about). For me, marketing is about making the selling easier - it's the stuff you do before the phone starts ringing, before the emails start coming in. And that's it really.
My service portfolio now includes business copywriting, web content and search engine marketing, as the internet has become more and more important in the marketing process. A website is part of your marketing toolbox, but it has to be done properly to work. And that means not only building it so it looks great and encompasses your brand values: it also has to be written for a screen (quite different from writing for print); it has to speak to all of your different visitors in a way that means something to them; and it has to work with search engines. None of it is rocket science, but it's all very important in making a website earn its living.
